What Do Passovers 4 Questions Have to Do with Our Modern Lives Passover started last Monday night and I was fortunate enough to attend a lovely seder (traditional Passover meal) with a family here in Madison. What especially impressed me was that they were open to discussing the contemporary implications of the traditional “four questions” (which are actually one question followed by four answers). The Four Questions Why is this night different from all other nights? On all other nights we eat leavened products and matzah [unleavened, cardboard-like “bread”], and on this night only matzah. On all other nights we eat all vegetables, and on this night only bitter herbs. On all other nights, we dont dip our food even once, and on this night we dip twice. On all other nights we eat sitting or reclining, and on this night we only recline. The explanation for each of the four items goes something like this: We eat matzah because the bread on the backs of the Jews fleeing Egypt did not have enough time to rise. The bitter herbs remind us of the bitterness of slavery in Egypt. Dipping karpas (potato, onion, or other vegetable) into saltwater reminds us that the joy of spring was tempered by the tears we cried while in Egypt. Similarly, the charoset (fruit-nut paste) into which the bitter herbs are dipped reminds us of the cement we used to create the bricks in Egypt. Again, a mix of sweetness and bitterness. Reclining like “royalty” is a way to commemorate our freedom. Now you might be saying, Thanks for the lesson in Jewish religion, but what does any of this have to do with business or job search activities? Well, let me tell you. The Four Questions in Our Modern Lives Remembering the matzah means remembering that if we rush around without giving ourselves time and space for our bread to rise, we will end up with a cardboard life. It’s the equivalent of sending out a mediocre resume or blindly taking action in a business without stepping back to strategize and consider the implications of those actions. Will we get results? Sure. But maybe not the robust ones we’re hoping for. It’s important during Passover to actually EAT matzah, not just avoid leavened food. Why? Because if we don’t eat the unleavened bread we will forget not to eat leavened food. It’s like saying Oh, I’ll remember to call x person back but not putting it on the calendar, then realizing at the end of the day that it never happened. Or saying I won’t spend 3 hours on Facebook today but failing to put any structures in place to make that happen. If we don’t eat the matzahâ€"if we don’t create a structure for rememberingâ€"we are in danger of forgetting and falling into our routine lives. Does this ring true for you? We all have bitter moments to remember in our lives. We have been rejected for our dream jobs. We have had clients asking for refunds. We have made poor, often costly decisions. We have had great ideas that bombed. It’s important to remember the bitterness of those moments, even as we move on into freer and more successful times. We will then appreciate our successes more and have greater perspective when things take what seems like a bitter turn. On Passover we dip a symbol of new growth into a symbol of sadness, then dip something bitter into something sweet yet representative of pain. Perhaps we dip twice because if we only dipped once we would forget. Forget how growing pains are not just something we have as children, but a fact of life for anyone committed to their own personal development. Forget that every move forward requires letting go of the way it was before. A new job might mean saying goodbye to trusted colleagues or spending less time at home with the kids. Taking on more leadership might mean leaving a comfort zone that was, well, comfortable. Life is a mix of bitter and sweet always, and if we forget, if we start expecting it to be some other way, we are likely to become even more bitter. The commandment to recline like royalty is a great reminder to take care of ourselves and allow ourselves to be taken care of. It means taking a break from rushing around without allowing time for the bread to rise. Whatever it represents for you, consider in this season giving yourself the gift of luxuriating just a little in the abundance and joy that surrounds you. The fifth chapter of John Buchan’s The Thirty-Nine Steps documents the transformation of protagonist Richard Hannay into his fourth disguise. Hannay, a mining engineer bored with the melancholy of his life in London, is suddenly thrust into the world of political espionage after the murder of his neighbor and freelance spy Franklin Scudder. After discovering Scudder’s body in his flat, Hannay escapes to Scotland to avoid false charges of homicide and the Black Stone, a group of German spies on a mission to destabilize Europe. Now on the run with Scudder’s notebook, Hannay moves through various personalities to evade the Black Stone spies. This particular chapter follows Hannay into the Scottish moors where he meets roadman Alexander Turnbull, whom he pretends to be for both his and Turnbull’s benefit. One of the most striking features of the chapter is Buchan’s particular word choice, which gives three distinct tones to its passages. First is Hannay’s impression of the roadman and his dress. Hannay notes Turnbull’s ‘filthy, old hat’ the ‘foul stump of a clay pipe,’ and the ‘vulgar’ color of the shirt gifted to him by Sir Harry. Buchan employs such diction to form the foundation of Hannay’s disguise and allows the rest of his appearance to fall into suit. He uses dust to create a water-mark around his neck where he imagines Turnbull’s washing might end. He rubs dust into his eyes and sunburnt cheeks, scuffs up his boots until they are well-worn, and scrapes at his fingernails until the edges cracked. The particular word choice, then, is not merely an overview of the typical roadman but a layering of Hannay’s assumed identity as well. The second tone is the specificity of aspects of Hannay’s appearance, which can be read as lending his character a certain anonymity. Hannay observes that the atrocious checked shirt received from Sir Harry, an accomplice met earlier in the tale, was the sort that ploughmen wear, that his neck is as brown as a tinker’s, and that his forearm resembles that of a blacksmith’s with its sunburn and old scars. Furthermore, Hannay believes a roadman’s eyes would also be slightly inflamed and endeavors to make his so by rubbing dirt into them. This listing of other professions not only presents a variety of other potential disguises, but also works to convey Hannay’s versatility and adaptability. Near the end of the chapter, Hannay mentions a scout in Rhodesia once told him that to ensure the success of any disguise it was necessary to ‘think yourself into it.’ With the combination and emphasis of both external and internal alteration, the pass age echoes Scudder’s own transformation at the beginning of the novel – Hannay becomes Alexander Turnbull by wearing what he wears, eating what he eats, and thinking what he thinks. Thus, the parallel transformations allow for a unique alignment of Hannay and Scudder’s characters, and it can be argued that Hannay is not assuming the roadman’s person so much as the spy’s. The third tone of the piece is apparent in Hannay’s description of his pursuers. Noticeably lacking from the narration is any sense of urgency, panic, or danger in the current predicament. Instead, Hannay refers to the German spies as his ‘friends’ and describes their relentless pursuit as a ‘match.’ Moreover, when speaking on the advice from his friend in Rhodesia, Hannay refers to his dealings as simply ‘queer.’ All three words support Hannay’s opinion of the entire affair as a game, like a high-stakes, transgeographical hide-and-go-seek. Additionally, the reader is reminded of Hannay’s idleness in London and the instant change in mood he experiences when first escaping capture by both the local police and the Black Stone. This is not to say that Hannay does not or refuses to comprehend the gravity of his situation, but rather that he rejoices in its severity and the excitement it brings to his previously monotonous existe nce. Like Sherlock Holmes, Hannay comes to operate as the bored intellectual. A final note of interest from chapter five is the reflection of the shift from the industrial, motorized setting of London to the heather and bogs of the Scottish moors. There is a complementary change to Hannay’s geographical relocation evident in the Black Stone pursuers and the local details of Hannay’s brief time as a roadman. Once Hannay’s appearance and thoughts are to his satisfaction and his trek to and from the quarry has begun, sheep occasionally come off the heather to stare at him. Yet a heron alighting in the stream to fish took ‘no more notice of [him] than if [he] had been a milestone.’ The sheep and the heron mirror the German spies who searched the moors earlier in their motor car and airplane; therefore, the animals’ apparent indifference toward Hannay indicates the success of his disguise. Hannay does not seem so out of place that the moor’s local inhabitants take great notice of his presence, and this implies that Ha nnay’s disguise will be equally effective against the foreign spies that are after him. Further confirmation of his outfit comes in the form of the new County Road Surveyor. Though new to the position, the Road Surveyor is assumed to be familiar with the appearance of the typical roadman, and Hannay has gone to such great lengths in attention to his looks that the appearance is validated. This ostensive authentication in turn gives Hannay the confidence to face his pursuers, who eventually follow the Surveyor up the road and meet Hannay. Moving ‘with the heavy step of the professional,’ Hannay has been efficacious in appearing, acting, and thinking himself into his chosen role, and therefore the disguise is a solid point in his favor in the game of life and death.

The play takes place in Venice, and while it can be described as what we now call a romantic comedy, it also draws attention to the harsh divides in the Venetian society brought on by conflicting beliefs and religions. Centuries later, in the early 2000 s, Paul Haggis wrote and directed a film called Crash, that follows multiple different characters (all of different backgrounds and races) as they meet and interact with each other, in overwhelmingly violent situations. Each character is either oppressed, oppresses someone else, or both, resulting in a cycle of racism, similar to the cycle of religious bigotry present in The Merchant of Venice. Ovid: The Art of Love There have been numerous questions that have always confused mankind since the early days. The significance of life, how everything functions, is there a god of every single topic that still confuses humans. Although those concepts create a good argument, a topic that is time consuming in our lives is how to pick up on women. We independently come up with our own style of picking up on a female through personal experiences and knowing stories. The majority advice given by Ovid is dead to me but there are a few things I do concur. Ovid seems like a man who has a well-built resume of being familiar with women as well as learned from other stories. The majority things he said in the book I am already familiar with and while I was reading I laughed at how time affects this topic very little. The first thing I have noticed was Ovid’s recommendation of judging a woman only during the day because all perspectives change when the combination of night and drinking are mixed. Even during the day can be difficult. You are walking behind them saying in your mind, â€Å"She is attractive†. But once you get the opportunity to pass by them and take a quick look back how many times have I said, â€Å"What was I thinking? † Nighttime is very similar but to an even greater degree. It isn’t until you are close enough to say if she is cute or not. This also goes for nightclubs where it is intentionally dark and misleading. Women that you danced with and looked marvelous the entire night immediately transform when the place is lighted up. That is why you get the digits in a lighted area if you are concerned about the looks. If not, then by all means take advantage of the darkness. In the present day, very little have maids so getting familiarized with the woman’s maids is getting familiar with her friends in a platonic manner, for the time being at least. If a woman likes you but her friends don’t then the all she is going to hear from them is how you do not deserve her and how an awful person you are. Every mistake you commit will be blown out of proportion and if you do something good will be rendered as you being phony and saying all sorts of things just aiming to get into her pants. Ovid having knowledge of keeping yourself in shape and clean in the era of very few baths and dirt is beyond impressive. Being lazy, dirty or unfit is a bad sign for women that there will be little effort at anything including a relationship. You do not necessarily need to wear fancy clothes but wearing dirty clothes is a turn-off in my opinion. We live in a heavyset nation where being fit not only benefits your health but is also an advantage to your interactions with the ladies. It does not necessarily mean you have to be a body builder but most girls find it a plus when a guy is athletic and can keep up. Makes them aware of you not being afraid of a workout. Compliments and flatteries may take you far if done in a subtle and discreet method. Considerably, I hear guys who spit game in a very direct and sometimes insulting manner. Speak to women in ways that flatter them and make them blush. Lying in this case is not only recommended but at times necessary. If she has a voice that cracks glass say it is a melancholic voice that sooths the mind and soul. It’s a white lie and really no harm comes from it. Ovid has the fair idea on how to deal with a sad woman. When she gets pissed off, don’t accumulate on her current troubles. The best thing is to be there for her, hear her problems and always support her decisions even if the issue is stupid or non-existent. Non-existent problems are abundant times that are self-esteem related but can just be made up problems such as why is. No matter what she says hold her and don’t let go, not in a sexual way just show her that you are there for her. â€Å"I’m the poor man’s poet, was poor myself as a lover, couldn’t afford gifts, so spun words. † The rich and the poor have two very different ways of wooing a girl. Girls praise a poem, but go for expensive presents:† Who needs a crappy poem when you can give diamonds. In my opinion, money doesn’t always bring success, but does make things a lot easier. Regardless of money entities and personality is needed for love to happen, love of money is different as loving someone. Money comes and goes rapidly opposed to feelings linger. One aspect I do disagree with is being the woman’s slave and allowing her to cheat on you. It is acceptable to please her and allow her to have it her way to a certain extent but being her slave is a huge negative. Be attentive to her but do not let her become your everything. Allow for each other some space for you to hang out with the guys every so often and let her be out with the girls. Even if they go clubbing, they just remain in their own small circle of friends and reject all guys that confront them. Be her friend, her lover and her emotional support opposed to being her slave. If you catch her cheating then it becomes a different story. Do you decide to leave her because she is not trustworthy and might be repetitive with her actions or stay and work things out. I would say leave her because there are so many fishes left in the sea and you are too valuable for a woman to treat you like you are nothing to her. One thing that most males do not learn from and Ovid mentioned is that competition creates a wanting feeling. I am not saying to purposely go out, cheat on her and force them both to compete for your love. Do not let her flirtatious ways blind you, which she mostly cannot help being flirtatious. Since the beginning, you noticed she was a flirt and cannot go wrong there. Instead of getting mad step your game up and flirt as well. Demonstrate to her she is not the only one that can get attention from the opposite sex. Again, do not go as far as to get another woman’s phone number while she is right next you which is a mindless move. Ovid got into too much detail and expected women to be close to perfect to get a guys’ attention because it does not take much effort to catch our eyes. One thing for women is to not be lazy because if you are then it might seem you are kind of boring and result our conversations to be short and dull. Do not look filthy, just make sure your clothes are clean and you smell good. The best approach is just make sure you don’t look like you haven’t taken care of yourself in months. Also be fit and healthy, I find that very attractive in a girl. You may call it curves and what not but if that is what you look like now what are you going to look like when your metabolism slows down and age starts revealing. Do not cheat, it is understandable if you are a flirt and you might not be able to help it but there is a huge difference between innocent flirting and flirting on purpose. This goes to the flirting subject, do not try and make your special someone jealous more often than not it leads to complications. Be there for your guy when he has troubles. We seem to be immune to emotions but that’s hardly the case, we just hide them way better. Beware of guys with the wrong intentions. If you are not sure if a guy has the right intentions ask the guys that know him and more likely they will tell you the truth because they themselves don’t like seeing girls get hurt by his actions. Allow us to protect you in some way or form even though we know you’re an independent woman. We have the natural instinct to protect our partner. Chivalry is not dead it’s just rare. Don’t give into our every wish and don’t expect to have every demand met we both have our opinions and beliefs. A relationship is working through them in a mutually benefiting manner. Know how your friends are and be sure to keep an eye on those who are seen with different guys constantly they might go after yours. When it comes to the sensual arts, don’t give in too easy. Let desire, passion, lust build up until it just explodes in a fury of ecstasy. Tell the guy what you like and what you don’t, if he doesn’t listen then he doesn’t deserve you. The opposite sex will always seem very distant and strange but in reality we share most of the same desires and needs. People grow with their morals and opinions set a certain way, when they meet someone they like those ideals might into question that is why we have conflicts and that is why we appear to be so different.
